Danau Tamblingan
Danau Tamblingan is a caldera lake in Bali’s Buleleng Regency.
It is one of three lakes that formed inside an ancient caldera, with the other two being Lake Buyan and Lake Bratan.
The lake is surrounded by dense rainforest and archaeological remnants of the 10th-century Tamblingan civilization.
The government has declared the lake and its neighbouring communities as a spiritual tourism region protected from modern development.

Danau Tamblingan is a caldera lake.
Size and Depth of Danau Tamblingan
The lake has a maximum length of 2 km (1.2 mi), a maximum width of 1.1 km (0.68 mi), and a surface area of 1.6 km2 (0.62 sq mi).
Its maximum depth is 90 m (300 ft).
The water level of the lake changes depending on the intensity of the rainy season.
During intense rain periods, some temples along the shore can get inundated.
Surrounding Rainforest and Wildlife
Danau Tamblingan’s beach is covered in a beautiful jungle with orchids and macaques.
The lake has an alpine climate due to its placement on a plateau over 1000 metres in elevation.
On the bank of the lake, there is only one village: Gubug, on the lake’s southern shore.
History
Ancient Tamblingan Civilization
The lake is surrounded by many ancient Balinese temples associated with the ancient Tamblingan civilization.
The original Tamblingan village shifted to four distinct locations near the lake, forming new communities known as Catur Desa (“four villages”).
Munduk, Gobleg, Gesing, and Umejero are the names of these villages.
Danau Tamblingan Temples and Spiritual Significance
The many temples surrounding Danau Tamblingan are associated with the ancient Tamblingan civilization.
The four villages that formed from the original Tamblingan village share a similar spiritual belief: to maintain the sanctity of Danau Tamblingan.
Therefore, temples were established along the lake to honour the gods.

Trekking and Canoeing
Visitors can go on guided forest treks and boat rides around the lake.
Jungle hikes last between 2 and 6 hours and can be scheduled at the entrance.
